What Covid 19 is not

So most of you may know I’m a registered nurse.  I have seen some crazy things over the past couple months, and some of it is worth sharing with the hopes you’ll pass the info along.

Covid 19 is contagious.  I know shocker, right?  However I can’t tell you the number of people who have been notified they’re positive for the virus, and yet they’re out shopping and visiting others without concern.  “I don’t feel sick.”  THAT’S AWESOME!  NOW GO HOME!  Why is it people don’t get the fact that just because they’re not feeling all that sick doesn’t mean they couldn’t put someone on a ventilator?  Maybe they missed the fact that Covid 19 is contagious and that the symptoms vary from one person to the next.  Maybe they thought, well everyone else is staying home so I won’t get anyone sick – “Did you think that when you passed the elderly couple in the grocery store?”  I don’t think I need to elaborate on the fact that one only member of the couple is going home.

Next, “Covid 19 is contagious, but so long as it’s someone I know and we stay 6 feet apart we’ll be fine.”  Folks, I do not want to have to explain this to one more patient.  Corona Virus is spread in the air.  Where it lands becomes an opportunity to pick up a ride with the next person who puts their hand down.  Let’s go with an example.  Four friends decide to meet up.  They all stand by a car.  One is in the front, one in the back, and one on each side.  One coughs and says it’s just allergies.  He looks pretty healthy and everyone blows it off.  One of the friends touches an area of the car where a droplet from the cough landed, and then rubs his nose.  The friend is also an Asthmatic.  Do you want to be that friend who actually had the virus, thought it was allergies, and now is hearing about his friend who is in the ER and is about to be put on a ventilator?  Think I’m exagerating?  Tell me why a guy who builds vacuums is building ventilators?  Hmmmm

“Most people will recover from Covid 19.”  Yep, however you don’t walk by or talk to only those folks.  If that were true, why do you think those working in the ER, in doctor’s offices, in the hospitals are wearing gowns, N95 masks, and face shields?  This is not rocket science.  If this is truly what you believe, let me just share that if common sense were lard, you wouldn’t be able to grease a pan.

Do I sound passionate about this?  Yep!  I have watched and listened to patients and families over the past couple months come to the realization that Covid 19 doesn’t care about anyone but itself.  It would love to spend time with as many people as possible, and make it so you can’t spend time with anyone else.

This will pass, however it won’t without leaving families without loved ones.  It won’t without forcing small businesses to close.  It won’t without making damn sure you don’t ever forget Covid 19.  As one who deals with it, the sooner I can say it’s also a history lesson can’t happen soon enough.
